[pflagall] Subj: Need help for a story for AARP magazine! Urgent!
To: pflagall@yahoogroups.com

I have a call from a writer who is working on a story for AARP's magazine. The story is not primarily on LGBT issues, but she would like to include a very specific kind of angle in it that I think we can bring to the table.

AARP's magazine has the highest circulation numbers in the world -- it reaches about 37 MILLION readers. This is a great chance for people to hear a PFLAG story and us to communicate our message of family acceptance.

She is looking for a very specific kind of story. Here are the details:

Angle: This is an article about estrangement and resolution after 50. In other words, about people who had something happen in their lives before 50 that caused a significant split with another person, but after age 50 had some kind of epiphany or incident that led them to want to find resolution for the split, which they did.

Who she's looking for:

-- A parent of an LGBT person.

-- Prior to age 50, had a difficult/challenging/seriously estranged relationship with their LGBT child because of their sexual orientation/gender identity. It needs to be significant -- the kind of thing that literally tore a relationship apart. You must be willing to give details. Was it religion that caused the division? Was it discomfort around this issue? Were you concerned about what people would say about your family? There needs to be a specific source (or sources) of conflict.

-- After age 50, had a realization that led them to want to repair this division. (I'm hoping that someone out there can identify PFLAG as the thing that inspired them!)

-- Worked to repair the relationship and wants to talk about how that happened and what it has meant.

If you or someone you know fits this description, please let me know ASAP! You must be willing to speak on the record about your experience. This could be an enormous opportunity to help people learn more about PFLAG, but I can't do it without your story!

Please contact me with a brief explanation of your story and the best way to reach you. It is most effective to e-mail me at jnavetta@pflag.org.

Thank you!
