New Year's Eve?

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 11:17 PM
New Year's Eve: I have no plans. Zero. Zilch. ZIP!

Also: I have no date. (Which is really quite ok with me!)

But: It would be sorta neat-o to go to something that required dressing up. In a fancy-schmancy (or semi-fancy) dress.

Does anyone know of anything like this? There's got to be some snooty Portland event/activity/thing that I can crash and bat my eyelashes and be charming for, right? (And I do it so well!)

Or: At least something interesting, even if it doesn't dictate dressing to the nines. Yes? Tips? Thoughts? Ideas? Pretty please, Portland!

Happy (almost!) new year!

SNNLC?

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 10:15 PM
I'm about to go to bed, but I'm astounded that there's no SNNLC post yet?  Whassup, peepz?

Oh, and to make it interesting, let's all post our new years resolutions.  Starting with me.  I resolve to work harder, spend more time with my family, walk the dog more, get more sleep, and learn to divide by zero.
As you know, Bob, the 2010 census is coming up, which means that Oregon's congressional districts will be redone after the data comes in and Oregon's legislature can squabble over where the boundaries are drawn.

From what I understand, Oregon's population has been growing fast enough, that there is a good chance (although not a certainty), that Oregon will get another house seat after 2010. Even if Oregon doesn't get a new seat, the old seats will be redistricted, because there has been a lot of internal movement of population.

Redistricting would be a very confusing job, even if the parties involved were impartial, which they are certainly not. Gerrymandering is one of the ugliest parts of the US political system. Luckily, as far as I can tell, Oregon's congressional districts are not currently heavily gerrymandered.

The thing is, as it currently is, Oregon's congressional districts are divided into four districts on the west side of the Cascades, most of which are districts that Republicans can't campaign in seriously, and then one district covering Eastern Oregon where the Democrats can't ever seriously campaign. Depending on what the population growth is in different regions, and whether a sixth district is added, and how tricky the state legislature wants to get, there is a chance that that status quo might be disrupted.

Just a fun thing to think about, to those of you who wish to think about such things!

Other wise, time to go back to talking about restaraunts and TV shows!

Local charities needing clothing donations?

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 3:38 PM
I have some pretty good quality winter clothes, some for women, some for a preschool-aged  kid. I've donated clothes like this to Fish (in SE) before, and I like how they work with local families.

I'd like to stay a bit closer to home, in inner N/NE PDX, if I can (I'll drive). Anyone know of small, good local charities or churches that could get these clothes to people who need them pretty quickly? I'm not looking for someone to sell them, but to pass them along directly. Then again, if there's someplace small and local that will sell them, that's okay too.

Thanks.
I have almost a two-year run of the monthly Tufts University Veterinary School magazine Catnip. That is, almost all issues published between 1/2007 through 12/2008. I need to clear some space in the house, so I'm giving them away. They're non-glossy B&W magazines, each with a three-hole drill, so you can put 'em in a binder if you want. There are (natch) articles about veterinary stuff, cute cat photos and stories, ratings of products, more cute cat photos and stories, etc. They're a bit used-looking, but not falling-apart or anything. Honest.

If you want 'em, say the word. Then PM me to arrange a pick-up time. Either Saturday or Sunday would be best. chez_xeno is located in NE Portland.

Thanks!

Brain pan squish squish

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 2:35 PM
I need a recommendation for a neurologist. Needs to be good with migraines as well as cysts in the brain. Vancouver area is a HUGE plus but I'm willing to go to Portland if I have to if the doctor is super.

I really hope next year is better for me, medically speaking.

Thank you.

Favorite Cover Song???

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 2:27 PM
Someone was kind of enough to gift me "This Is England" for Christmas.

The song in the final scene is a cover of The Smiths, "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want", by Clayhill. Very nice cover.

Anyone have a cover song they like better than the original?

Canned Food Drive

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 12:58 PM
Greetings PDX!  I have a small pile of canned food gathered from friends and myself that I wish to donate somewhere and I know there are alot of places out there who accept donations.  I was hoping perhaps some of you work at places or at least know of places that are especially in need right now perhaps not making their quotas during their holiday drives or something. It is not a huge amount of food but I would like to see it make the largest impact it can.  Thanks in advance :)

random free stuff

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 11:22 AM
I have a few pieces of chipped Fiestaware that I am about to consign to the garbage, but I thought I'd check here and see if anyone is crafty enough to desire them. They include a royal blue and a yellow coffee mug, and a yellow soup mug. They all have handles and obvious chips around the rim.

Also available is a pile of old bath towels and a couple bags of mostly size 12-ish clothing. Those will be dropped off at the Goodwill quite soon unless someone wants to come and claim them.

Location: SW PDX/Beavertron, off of Canyon Road. I'll be around til close to 5:00 today, and sporadically tomorrow.

Found Cat

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 11:15 AM
Ok, to be completely honest, the cat found us. While visiting a friend's home yesterday, he introduced us to a stray cat in his back yard that he had been feeding for a couple days. He was wondering if it might be the mother of some kittens in his crawlspace under his house and had been making friends in the hopes of finding this out and to be able to give the cat to a shelter for adoption if she was not responsible for feeding newborns.

As it turned out, the cat was incredibly friendly and loving when approached. Purred up a storm, face cuddled, and allowed herself to be completely inspected, belly checked for matted hair and obvious signs of motherhood, ears looked into, paws massaged and checked, even tail and rear end checked for worm sign. The cat was purring and loving the entire time. She is starved, bone thin, every knob of her spine and tail able to be felt as you pet her.

When she was brought to our home, it turned out she is even litter box trained. She is currently being kept separate from our own cats for a brief fostering while we hope to try to find the person that seems to have lost a very well trained, very loving, very lonely kitty cat girl. If we find out someone abandoned such a beautiful and loving cat it will be very maddening.

She was located in the area of NE 76th and Prescott. She has probably been missing for at least a few weeks. She is small, seems young(a year maybe unless she is just a very small breed), gray primarily with some paler, almost white on the belly, long haired. (SEE PICS)

If you recognize this cat, please pm me here on Live Journal with any information you may have.

I had to do it:

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 2:55 AM
So, I read somewhere that if you are at a tiki bar, and someone is ruining the ambiance by snorting coke, you can just turn the lights on for 30 seconds, and then afterwards your ambiance should be fine again.
So, I expect that we might get five people in here tonight. I'm gonna be eating some ice cream and browsing the internet for a while. If it's totally dead, I guess I'll go back to playing Freelancer.

How was your day, FNNLC?

happy day

Venues for almost 21 year old

  • Dec. 25th, 2009 at 4:51 PM
Hey all, my daughter just moved here and although she is not 21 yet, she is looking for some places to hang out.
She loves kareoke but all the places I know that have kareoke nights are for 21 and older.

Please toss some ideas my way....

"name you're own price" question

  • Dec. 25th, 2009 at 5:21 AM
Any of you ever used the Priceline 'name you're own price' dealyo?

Pros? Cons? Summaries of your experiences?

It sounds all well and good to put down a stupidly low price for a ticket and ideally getting that price, I'm just a bit wary of getting screwed and flown across the country and back just to get to Vegas.

anything open on December 25th?

  • Dec. 25th, 2009 at 1:14 AM
All-knowing deeps,

If you could, help me compile a list of stores and such that will be open on Christmas, as currently I'm at a loss-- but perhaps my despair will help others!

In particular, early tomorrow I was hoping to swing by a grocery store for some beverages, but it seems like everything in my (close-in NE) neighborhood is going to be closed-- The Frederick Meyer, Safeway, New Seasons, Target, et al. Is anything larger than a 7-11 going to be completely shut down? I've done a lot of searching online and calling stores, but before I resort to calling every store in the Portland area for their hours, I'm hoping some people have the inside neighborhood scoop. I'm feeling that I've got to be missing some that might be open just further afield and I'm certainly willing to travel within reasonable (20-30 minutes away, max) distance.

(Oh how I curse my roommate for drinking the cheap bubbly I was going to bring to brunch tomorrow, as now it seems nearly irreplaceable when I need it-- blah!)

Thanks guys and merry something something of your choice!
