Elder Resource Alliance (ERA) is part of Safety Net Services, a program of Friendly House Inc., a neighborhood center in NW Portland, Oregon.

ERA works with and for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and intersex (LGBTQI) elders who reside in the 4 county, metro Portland area, however we are known to attract seniors from across the country as well as allies of all ages.

"A PLACE TO LIVE movingly chronicles the creation of Triangle Square, an innovative affordable housing project specifically addressing the needs of LGBT seniors in Los Angeles. As housing and living costs continue to rise and the health care system becomes increasingly more inaccessible, many LGBT seniors face further marginalization and isolation. The first of its kind in the nation, Triangle Square is part of a burgeoning movement to create new models for community throughout the United States.

Central to the story are the seven remarkable and colorful individuals who embark upon an emotional rollercoaster in search of their future home. Triangle Square has given each of them hope, and we follow these courageous elders through the highly competitive and tension-filled application process. At the same time we are offered a very intimate look into their histories, dreams, and fears. With great humor and determination they face the challenge of their uncertain future in order to find a secure, safe place to live – for some, for the first time in their lives.

A PLACE TO LIVE is as much a celebration of collaborative vision and hope as it is an exploration of our diverse history and the importance of human connection. The film underscores the great need in our society for building communities that honor our elder citizens and that address the concerns of an already vulnerable population."

Details: For 10 weeks this Autumn, people who have historically, until now, been marginalized, got together front and center to practice writing in community in free creative writing workshops provided by Write Around Portland.

This December 17^th from 6:30-8:30, Hear the powerful stories of these gifted writers including ERA members and heterosexual seniors from Friendly House Senior Program,  as well as approximately 100 Portland area writers including at promise youth and adults affected by mental illness, drug or alcohol addiction, HIV/AIDS, low income, developmental disability, incarceration, women who are survivors of domestic violence or sexual assault, women who have cancer, burn victims, and hospice volunteers.

Few Portland events include so many diverse voices.

It's been said that while most people love their families, they don't always like them very much, and that emotional dividing line is the heart of this comedy directed by Jodie Foster. Claudia Larson (Holly Hunter) usually approaches family reunions with a certain trepidation, but as she prepares to fly from her home in Chicago to her parent's place in Baltimore for Thanksgiving, she is more apprehensive than usual. Claudia has just lost her job, she's not feeling at all well, and her teenage daughter, Kitt (Claire Danes), who is staying behind, informs Claudia on the way to the airport that she plans to use the weekend to lose her virginity with her boyfriend. The family festivities are already under way when Claudia arrives at the home of her mother, Adele (Anne Bancroft), and father, Henry (Charles Durning). Claudia's brother, Tommy (Robert Downey Jr.), whose homosexuality is tolerated without being discussed on a practical basis, has brought along his new friend Leo Fish (Dylan McDermott). Tommy doesn't get along well with his fussbudget sister, Joanne (Cynthia Stevenson), who wears her self-sacrifice like a badge of honor, and he simply hates her husband, Walter (Steve Guttenberg), who has often been the target of Tommy's barbed sense of humor. While the siblings and in-laws struggle to remain civil, their quite eccentric aunt Gladys (Geraldine Chaplin) arrives; she insists on discussing her digestive problems, and after a few drinks, she confesses her long-ago lust for Henry. ”Fun Bus Ride” to Byways Café and Macaw Sanctuary. Meet at Friendly House Community Center at 9:00 a.m. sharp. We’ll head over for delicious breakfast at Byways Café. After breakfast, we’ll travel to Macaw Landing Wildlife Sanctuary, a secret hiding place for colorful, rescued Macaw birds, and a variety of other critters: a donkey named Speckles (who thinks he's a dog), an African goose who loves people, a spirited gaggle of geese, Attacus, a rescued horse, chickens, Silkie the rooster, and two Pygmy goats. Along with the farm animals you may spot an assortment of wild animals as well: deer, coyotes, raccoons, beaver, Western Painted turtles, and rabbits.

ERA’s second launch of the ginormously successful "Seniors Sharing Stories, Companions on the Road" (3SCOR), a forum bursting with encouragement and enthusiasm for older community
members of all gender identities and sexual orientations, to read
their writing aloud for a warm and appreciative audience.

The next 3SCOR Reading through Elder Resource Alliance will be held:
at Friendly House Community Center conference room.

Providence Elderplace Information Session through Elder Resource Alliance. Concerned about where to find LGBTQI friendly in home support and health care, inclusive housing, and when the time comes, hospice care? Providence Elderplace specialists will present an overview of their services and illustrate how diversity is woven throughout their systems of care for the elderly, by a compassionate team who have a true commitment to meeting the unique needs and concerns of diverse populations. Meet at Friendly House at 8:30 a.m. sharp for a “Fun Bus” ride to Astoria on the awe inspiring Oregon Coast. A reserved table and friendly staff are waiting for us to munch brunch at T Paul’s Urban Café, co owned by gay restaurateur Chadd Paul Flues. After our meal, we’ll have choices about visiting the beach for an invigorating walk, and/or venturing to Astoria’s Columbia River Maritime Museum which features interactive exhibits that combine history with cutting-edge technology. Hot Glass, Cool Art. Trip on “The Fun Bus!”
”Lino Tagliapietra in Retrospect; A Modern Renaissance in Italian Glass.”
and Exploring “Chiluly’s Bridge of Glass”
At 11 years of age, Lino Tagliapietra left school to work full time in the glassmaking industry in the glass center of Murano, an island in the Venetian lagoon. This child, who developed into the world’s greatest living glassblower, also proved to be a superb artist and educator. At age 45, Tagliapietra, (who did not speak a word of English) stepped onto an airplane for the first time and made a trip to Seattle. He went on to unhesitatingly share what he knew with artists all over the United States, then all over the world, changing the art of glassmaking. After years of factory production work, Tagliapietra also benefited from his new collaborators, meeting artists who regarded the material and experience in a different light, blowing glass for the creative challenge, and sheer joy.

This is the first ever retrospective look at the legendary Tagliapietra’s art and career in its entirety. The Tagliapietra exhibition represents not only pivotal and renowned series of artistic work covering a period of approximately 30 years, but also designs made for industry and private objects that have never been exhibited.

We’ll also check out Tacoma’s native son Dale Chihuly’s “Bridge of Glass”, a 500 foot long pedestrian bridge that soars 700 feet in the air. Chihuly says of the creation “We wanted something unique in the world, something that is full of color and offers a joyous experience to passersby both night and day.”

We’ll lunch onsite at Gallucci’s Café inside Tacoma Museum of Glass. For those driving themselves, meet the “Fun Bus Riders” for lunch at Gallucci’s between 11:15 – 11:30.

”Civil Writes,” intergenerational poetry therapy. A healing, writing workshop. Together, in a supportive accepting atmosphere, we’ll think about and discuss our coming out stories, where we experienced acceptance or rejection from ourselves or others. We’ll delve into eclectic, nature and animal inspired poetic musings about unconditional love and non judgmental characters of our animal friends, by Denise Levertov, Walt Whitman and Spanish language poets. We’ll build on our discoveries and dreams, utilize Animal Cards to identify our totem animals, see how our “animal attributes,” influence our relationships with selves and others. Observing Walt Whitman’s example, we’ll write a “song of self,” About where and who we were “then and now.” Facilitated by Wendy Thompson, who holds a Master Degree in Fine Arts, is an award winning poet, and has taught writing for over a decade in Portland and Vancouver.

The January 2nd vigils were only the first step to defending the domestic partnership law we all worked so hard to pass. There are no “do-overs” in a lawsuit. Basic Rights Oregon filed a motion to intervene in the lawsuit, and the court has granted our motion. We can now work closely with the State to defend the law from attacks by the extremist, out-of-state interests that want to turn back the clock on equality in Oregon.
The rest is up to you. We must take this opportunity to ensure that our voices are heard. Oregonians need to see thousands of us, from every corner of Oregon, who are willing to stand up and be counted. Please, pledge to attend the Jan. 30 Rally to Defend Equality in Portland, and commit to turning out your friends, family and neighbors for this critical event.
This law affects real people. Let your voice be heard. Gay or straight - it’s time to stand up and be counted.

Our Mission:
Elder Resource Alliance is a coalition of organizations and individuals, within the Portland metropolitan area, that works to enhance the lives of older gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning and intersex community members through education, advocacy, outreach and resource development.

What drives us.......

The estimated 10,000 LGBTQI elders in and around the Portland metropolitan area.

Medicaid regulations protect the assets of married spouses when the other spouse enters a nursing home or long-term care facility; no such protections are offered to same-sex partners.

LGBTQI elders are 5 times less likely to access mainstream senior

Social Security does not pay benefits to surviving same-sex life partners, costing LGBTQI seniors $124 million a year in unaccessed benefits.

We encourage GLBTQI seniors to help us create change in the community by joining us at our meetings the first Wednesday of the month.

Education
Elder Resource Alliance diversity trainings seek to increase sensitivity to the needs and concerns of the elder LGBTQI community by incorporating both academic materials and personal experiences in our presentations.

We present our training curriculum to college classes, social service agencies,
groups of long-term care providers, or other groups upon request.

Outreach

LGBTQI elders are often more socially isolated (closeted) than their younger counterparts. Outreach efforts are directed at letting them know there is a community resource available to address their needs with sensitivity.
